Gary Payton
NBA Champion and Hall of Famer
"The Glove" • Oakland's Own
"The Glove" Started Here
Before he became an NBA legend, Gary Payton was a young kid walking through the doors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland. Known for his grit, confidence, and unmatched defensive skills, Gary credits the Club with giving him a safe place to grow—and the foundation to dream big.
Nicknamed "The Glove" for his fierce on-ball defense, Gary played 17 seasons in the NBA, establishing himself as one of the greatest point guards in basketball history. His tenacious defense and competitive spirit were honed on the courts of Oakland, where the Boys & Girls Club provided structure, mentorship, and endless opportunities to play.
Despite his global success, Gary has always stayed connected to Oakland. He regularly gives back to youth in his hometown—funding scholarships, hosting camps, and showing up as a role model for the next generation.
"The Club kept me off the streets and on the court. It saved my life."
