CEO, The San Francisco Foundation
From West Oakland to Changemaker
Fred Blackwell is an alumnus of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland whose early experiences at the Club helped shape a lifelong commitment to equity and public service. Born and raised in West Oakland, Fred went on to become one of the region's most respected civic leaders.
He currently serves as CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, where he leads one of the largest community foundations in the country. Under his leadership, the foundation has sharpened its focus on racial and economic equity—mobilizing millions in philanthropic dollars to support affordable housing, job creation, education, and community health.
Fred's journey from Club kid to changemaker is a testament to the power of early support, strong mentorship, and community investment. The values he learned at the Boys & Girls Club—service, leadership, and giving back—continue to guide his work today.
