Oakland Students to Receive Laptops and Video Cameras to Help Teach Senior Citizens How to Use the Internet

Teens Complete Advanced Digital Tech Skills Program From Comcast

WHAT:              
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland, Inc.will honor 20 graduates as part of the Comcast Digital Connectors Program, which helps teens teach senior citizens how to use the Internet.  The students will each receive a certificate of completion, a netbook laptop computer and a Flip video camera from Comcast. The Comcast Digital Connectors program is a major technology learning initiative that teaches teens and young adults ages 14 – 21 about broadband technologies, and how to put that knowledge to work in a wide range of community service activities. The celebration and certificate presentation and award of gifts will take place at The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland, Inc. Center.  This year’s Comcast Digital Connectors Program will graduate a total of 126 students from seven sites across the Northern California region.

The Comcast Digital Connectors program trains youth from primarily diverse, low-income backgrounds in Internet and computer skills. Teens meet weekly after school, have the option to earn a Cisco IT Essentials certification of completion and receive a complimentary netbook upon graduation from the program. Comcast Digital Connectors is also a community service program, as participants volunteer at senior centers, churches, local schools and other community organizations, spreading digital literacy in their community. Since the program began, more than 2,000 Digital Connectors have participated, volunteering more than 100,000 hours to bridge the digital divide in their communities. Through training and service, Comcast Digital Connectors is preparing today’s youth for the jobs of tomorrow.
