On July 1, 1992, Calvester R. "Cal" Stanley became our Executive Director. Cal, a club alumnus also, joined the East Oakland Clubhouse (later the Ossian E. Carr Branch) at age nine. He earned a Junior Staff position at age 14 - working the control counter and helping with the P. E. program until 1975, when he left to enroll at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where he earned a bachelor's degree in preparation for a career in the Boys Club (later Boys & Girls Club) Movement. After graduation, Cal became Unit Director of the West Fresno Branch of Boys Clubs of Fresno, California. He returned to Oakland in May, 1981, to direct the new Wallace W. Knox Branch in North Oakland. Cal was promoted to Assistant Executive Director in May, 1988, and was appointed Executive Director, succeeding Marion Sims on July 1, 1992.
In January, 1993, with Eric Schmier serving as President, Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland entered into partnership with the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA), Harold Davis, Ph.D., Executive Director. The partnership resulted in The Gardens Branch. Located in Central East Oakland, The Gardens Branch is our fourth service delivery site. The Peralta Brach is our second Clubhouse in public housing.
Many past presidents of the Board of Directors of Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland have made their unique contributions of time, talent, and money to the Clubs and to the national Movement. Three deserve special recognition. Mr. J. Morris Browning, former President of Mary Ellen Jams and Jellies, was the first contributor to our pooled income fund for donors who wish to make deferred gifts to Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland. Mr. Clarence J. Woodward, former Chairman of the Board of the Rucker Company, has been a "leader among leaders" in Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland, in the East Bay community, as a Trustee of Boys Clubs of America, and as a Director of Boys & Girls Clubs of America - Pacific Region. The late Gerald A. Awes, former Chairman of the Board of Lucky Stores, Inc., initiated the concept and made the first gift to a scholarship fund for college bound Club members.
